Ask Dr. Manago (FAQ's)

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a system of medicine concerned mainly with two closely related conditions: misalignments of the vertebral column (backbone), and nerve interference.

Since the backbone houses and protects your delicate spinal cord, misalignments of spinal bones can compress various nerves, causing interference to the messages going back and forth between the brain and the rest of the body. This is an extremely hazardous situation as the nervous system, either directly or indirectly, controls and coordinates every function in your body.

Chiropractic has been an established and widely used form of medicine for many years. So much has been written about its techniques and effectiveness that we suggest you visit one of the following websites to find out more. Keep in mind that Manago Chiropractic is a leading-edge group that utilizes many new and improved techniques that may not be discussed on other websites.

What is a subluxation and why does it matter?

Misalignment of the spinal column segment that causes nerve interference is called a vertebral subluxation. Subluxations disrupt the normal function of the nervous system, reducing the brain's ability to integrate the tissues supplied by the damaged nerve with the rest of the body. This condition may begin as localized back pain, but if allowed to persist, can manifest in organic dysfunction. In other words, today's pain can become tomorrow's illness.

How do you diagnose what’s wrong and determine if it’s correctable?

We use several methods to determine where the misaligned vertebra and nerve interference exists:

  1. X-ray analysis
  2. Postural analysis
  3. Motion and static palpation
  4. Leg checks
  5. Special research instruments

The information we gain from each of these sources gives us a complete picture of your spinal integrity and nervous system function. This data tells us exactly when, where, and how to adjust a subluxation. As a result, you receive maximal correction with a minimal amount of force applied each and every time you visit our office.

Does Chiropractic hurt?

Generally not in and of itself, especially when compared to other conventional treatments for pain. However, while undergoing the health-restoring procedure of Chiropractic, you may briefly experience discomfort that is the result of the corrective, manipulative movements employed in releasing spinal nerve pressures that are causing your body aches, pains and disease.

These corrective or “reaction” symptoms generally express themselves in the form of minor pain and soreness. Reaction symptoms represent a healthful change taking place in your body and are a positive sign of healing!

How can I get the best results from my treatment?

It has been proven conclusively, over many years, that regularity in Chiropractic treatment is the most important factor in health restoration. You must allow enough time to allow the ligaments to adjust to their new positions and become strong again. Otherwise, the original condition may return, potentially worse than before.

Beyond temporary Relief Care, Manago Chiropractic also provides Corrective Care and Health Maintenance services in our office. Corrective Care seeks to correct the fundamental causes of your problem by realigning the spine and the body. This results in relief from pain and symptoms, spinal realignment, improved body function, and increased energy. Health Maintenance creates better health and prevents problems from occurring. Health Maintenance programs are designed individually and produce optimum energy, endurance, and ideal lifetime health care.

Will you “pop and crack” my back like other Chiropractors do?

No, we use a highly refined system of gentle, non-invasive spinal re-alignment techniques called The Light Force Adjustment.

How does The Light Force Adjustment work?

A chiropractic adjustment is, by definition, the application of force to correct misalignments of the vertebral column for the purpose of removing interference from the nervous system. Unlike to techniques used by most traditional Chirpractors, Manago Chiropractic uses The Light Force Adjustment. This brings the spine back into alignment by holding a slight, highly directional pressure on key lever points over a prolonged period of time.

Patients appreciate this method because it is very gentle. Only 4 to 6 ounces of pressure are used in the adjustment. This represents a quantum leap in chiropractic technology and allows the chiropractor to remain faithful to Hipprocrates' famous dictum: "Physician, first do no harm." Our adjustments apply the minimum amount of force to the body while attaining the maximum amount of healing benefits.

How can such a light and gentle force move a vertebra?

To understand the answer to this question requires that you know two spinal facts: 1) There is almost no friction between the bones of a healthy spine. The surfaces where vertebra contact each other are extremely slick, and the bones slide against each other like two pieces of ice. 2) The main force holding the spine in alignment is the tension supplied by ligaments and muscles. Together, these muscles, ligaments and vertebra make up a highly sophisticated system of mechanical levers.

We all know how a heavy rock can be moved with little force by using a stick as a lever. Light Force Adjustments make use of the natural levers in the spine. By applying steady pressure to key lever points, the tension on the entire spine can be adjusted to its proper value. This process gently removes stress from the nervous system without damaging local tissues. The body's healing capabilities can then focus on repairing the subluxation, rather than dealing with excessive forces applied to the body.

Can children be adjusted with the Light Force system?

Yes. Children and elderly people respond beautifully to this gentle type of spinal correction.

Is the Light Force system effective for car accidents and on the job injuries?

Yes. The early correction of misaligned vertebra will enhance the healing process in any type of injury or bodily stress.

What type of training is required to practice Light Force adjusting?

In addition to the six years of standard Chiropractic education, the Light Force system requires an additional 140 hours of intensive training at the Toftness Post-Graduate School of Chiropractic in Cumberland, Wisconsin.

What is a spinal disc?

Spinal discs are spacers that separate the vertebrae. Discs create clearance between the vertebrae and the delicate spinal nerves and allows movement of the spinal column. The early signs of disc problems are stiffness and restricted movement. Just as a tire is inflated with air, a spinal disc is filled with fluid. If the disc is overworked or injured it loses fluid just as a tire loses air and goes flat.

How do you solve problems with spinal discs?

We use an extraordinary system called Non-Invasive Disc Rehabilitation (N.D.R.). This new treatment is neither a surgical procedure, nor a drug or needle injection, but a whole new technology for treating pain.

What happens when a disc loses fluid?

When a disc loses too much fluid, it becomes dehydrated and painful. With N.D.R., intradiscal fluid exchange is increased from negative to positive, bringing more fluid back into the disc. To continue our previous analogy, if we put air back into a tire, it resumes its normal shape and size. This is similar to N.D.R., which brings fluids back into the disc so the disc can regain its normal shape, size and function.

How is N.D.R. different from other treatments?

Drugs have many side effects and offer only temporary relief. Statistically, surgery has only o 23% success rate and is extremely expensive, high-risk, and painful. In contrast, N.D.R. has an 82% success rate, is gentle and painless, and is proven to be the safest procedure available.

N.D.R. is not just for the rich and famous. Insurance companies - especially auto accident insurance companies - enthusiastically pay up to l00% for N.D.R. treatment. N.D.R. is a natural, gentle, painless treatment. Patients look forward to each soothing treatment. I encourage you to share this vital information with anyone you know suffering from disc pain. You could be responsible for bringing joy back into someone's life.
